Chifundo's Self-introduction: From Malawi to KREATE
Konnichiwa! Hajimashite, watashi wa Chifundo Njala desu. Marawi kara kimashita.
I enrolled at Tohoku University in April this year as a research student, then I will enroll in Master’s course under Special Selection for International Students (different from IGPAS) in October 2026.
I have a background in Earth Science from the Malawi University of Science and Technology. During my undergraduate studies, I conducted a research on flood hazard mapping in the Lower Shire Basin using GIS and remote sensing.
After that, I worked as a Geologist with the Geological Survey Department (Malawi government), where I gained experience in geotechnical investigations, mineral exploration, and geohazard mapping especially landslides, as well as geological mapping and geochemical surveys.
I’m particularly interested in using integrated geoscience techniques, combining geophysics, geochemistry, and remote sensing, particularly for REE mineralisation in carbonatite rocks.
I am very happy to join this lab, and I look forward to learning from you all and working together. I am very grateful to conduct research under Prof. Tatsuki Tsujimori. Arigatou guzaimasu!
